Nadian Joseph and Alazne Estaphane, who are children of employees, were the recipients of WLBL’s 2016 scholarships, which are presented to pupils who perform well at the yearly Common Entrance Examination.

“Every year we give out four new scholarships, but we only had two children from WLBL write the 2016 Common Entrance Exam and we are extremely proud of their performance. For the past 40 years, we have viewed our employees as an integral part of our success and this extends to their families as well. The awarding of the annual scholarships to our employee’s children is one way in which we support our employees and their children’s growth and development” stated Erik Hammer, Human Resources Manager (HRM).

In addition, WLBL also has a textbook scheme where books are purchased for students at primary, secondary and tertiary level. “The Textbook Scheme which began in 1985 caters to the children of permanent hourly and monthly paid employees and helps them in meeting the cost of primary, secondary and post-secondary level education. All we require is that the employees register with the HR department and bring in the book lists of eligible children and return all text books as soon as possible so we can administer the scheme” concluded Erik Hammer, HRM.

Congratulations to the new scholarship awardees and the students who maintained their scholarships for the upcoming school year. WLBL remains dedicated and committed to the education and enhancement of employees and their families, continuing to grow and develop with Saint Lucia.

NSC responds to imminent tuition fee increase at SALCC

PRESS RELEASE – In a press briefing held by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College earlier this month, Principal of the institution described the current fee structure as “unrealistic”, therefore hinting at an impending increase in tuition.

Last year, through joint discussions between the executive of the NSC and the Board of Governors, the two parties agreed to establishing a payment method to assist less fortunate students in pursuing their dreams.

Hence, whatever structure considered by the college must reflect a total transformation in its day to day functions, which student services and faculty must reciprocate.

Several challenges such as the poor communication between administration and students, ineffective security for students on campus against outside elements and the absence of modern technologies to enhance the entire student experience must be addressed in a robust effort to upgrade the status of the institution.

The National Students’ Council supports any drive adding value to education system as long as all surrounding mechanisms are established and works in the best interest of the students of Saint Lucia.

Millet Infant School will definitely be re-opened, says CEO

Marcus Edward, Chief Education Office at the Ministry of Education.

Marcus Edward, Chief Education Office at the Ministry of Education.

Despite there is an ongoing issue surrounding the use of the Millet Infant School which currently located on private property, the Ministry of Education is assuring parents that this will not affect the school’s re-opening.

Chief Education Officer Marcus Edward told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) on Monday that while the issue is still being ironed out, classes for the new academic term, will begin as planned.

Marcus said as he continues to visit various schools across the island to ensure that they are in good condition for the re-opening of the new school term, he will visit the parties involved again.

He said he will speak with them to ensure that there are no further issues in the short term.

In May, parents and guardians had raised concerns over the school’s future, after it was discovered that the entrance to the building had been blocked.

SNO understands that there is an issue in relation to a lease agreement between the owner of the land which the school currently occupies and the catholic church which operates the school with government’s help.

Edward admits that this issue may not be resolved right away, but said government is working to address it.

The chief education officer explained that the issue is not primarily about money, rather it had to do with other matters that the church wanted to negotiate, which he did not disclose.

“The gentleman is to be compensated for the use of his property by the church and the church is arranging that. We are confident that the church will do that in good time to allow school to open.”

Some one hundred children attend the Millet Infant School.

All schools re-open on Monday, September 5, 2016.

PRESS RELEASE – St. Lucian teachers will be pleased to learn that a new scheming and lesson planning tool has been released in time for the new school year. The website, www.stluciateachersonline.com is free and will allow teachers to upload, download and share schemes, lesson plans and teaching activities with colleagues across the island.

The goal of this sharing tool is to reduce the workload placed upon teachers, by allowing them to collaborate and share time consuming tasks such as scheming and lesson planning. The effectiveness of this tool is dependent on teachers’ willingness to collaborate and share teaching resources with their peers.

In other words teachers should not go to the website only to get a lesson plan or scheme, but must be willing to contribute to the community pool. As the sharing pool becomes larger, teachers will be able to access resources for their classes with no hassle. This means no more routinely sacrificing evenings and weekends planning for classes. Teachers will now be able to maintain a healthy work and family life.

Stluciateachersonline offers the following features for schemes and lesson plans:

Dr. Rigobert.

PRESS RELEASE – The roadmap for elevating the quality and effectiveness of the Ministry of Education was undertaken recently, at an instructional focus meeting, held at the NSDC Centre in Vieux Fort.

The meeting provided stakeholders in education with the opportunity to chart the way forward and to make improvements on professional growth and leadership practices within all departments of the ministry.

These are areas, which Minister for Education Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert, believes are integral to the various departments achieving their mandates.

“That kind of stocktaking and introspection is critical to growth. There is little good for us to become comfortable doing what we’ve been doing forever, without sticking a pin and saying let us review what we’ve been doing. Let us highlight our wins and our successes, but further let us identify the gaps and determine how best we can narrow these with a view to improving upon what we are doing,” emphasized the Minister in her remarks.

unnamed (7)

A major aspect of the meeting was the area of leadership within the education system. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Esther Brathwaite called on participants to embrace change as they look to achieve their goals.

“We need to share a common concern about helping students develop 21st century skills. We are the management and leadership in the education system; so as leaders let us transform the pedagogy. Let us expand the learning beyond the classroom walls,” said Ms. Brathwaite.

The two day meeting was guided under the theme, “Increasing Productivity and Effectiveness through Collaboration and Consistency.”
